The Antidote to Ableism is Autistic Pride

I write this piece in the middle of the night in my parents’ east Toronto home during the summer 2020 heat- and pandemic-wave. Weeks earlier, my spouse kicked me out of our cramped apartment with words carefully calculated to kill our marriage: “you’re nothing but a drain on me.”

He was technically correct: My four-figure income was dwarfed by his $50K/year.

This cut deep. As a radical social worker and autistic self-advocate, one of the issues against which I rail fiercely is that married disabled folks in Ontario do not have marriage equity: if we are married to someone earning an income, we are not eligible for income support or the Ontario Drug Benefit.
